Here’s a challenge to all the women in the lives of all the fathers out there – be they daughters, wives, mothers, grandmothers, twitter-buddies of Congressman Weiner, whatever. Go against all of your instincts, walk out onto the patio in the 95-degree heat, fire up the 1,500-degree grill and make daddy a big steak for Fathers’ Day.
It’s what he wants, no matter how much he might try to be politically correct and deny it.
I know it’s a sacrifice. I once asked Stephen Raichlen, the global barbecue book author, why women mostly don’t grill, and he said it’s because it never occurred to most of women that standing downwind from a smoky fire was, you know, fun.
But don’t you love your daddy?
Oh, and make it a prime rib-eye steak. I know a filet mignon is more expensive, but what daddy wants is that wonderful marbling – also known as fat – that you get in a rib-eye. That’s where the flavor is, right, Joe? Sure it’s unhealthy. You can feed him Brussels sprouts starting Monday.
What about wine? Just one rule. Don’t skimp. It needs to be big and red and hearty.
Here are a few examples (you can see these on Linda’s website):
- Casa Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandre Carmenere from Chile: Carmenere is similar to merlot only better – big body, huge flavor, with big, ripe tannins to go with that wonderful steak. It’s about $30.
- This second wine is going to make everybody mad, because it costs $90 a bottle. But it’s one of the top five wines I’ve ever sampled in my life. It’s the Fuedi di San Gregorio Serpico from southern Italy. Made of grapes from 200-year-old vines. It smells like rose petals and earth, and tastes like mulberries and vanilla. Fabulous.
- So now I’d better list a good but cheap red wine. Try an Argentine Malbec by Valentin Bianchi. It’s hearty and red and tastes like black cherries and dark chocolate. Great with that steak. And it’s only $12.
So don’ t write in. And have a happy father’s day.
